Chapter 28

The team arrived back at the base just before the night fell, the city’s neon glow fading behind them as the heavy doors slid shut. The day had been a calm one from their usual routine, and the exhaustion of fun—rather than training or missions—was a welcome change.

Freddie flopped onto the couch in the common room, letting out an exaggerated sigh. “I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired from just… having fun.”

Luis chuckled, tossing a pillow at him. “You’re just out of shape, Freddie. All that telekinesis must be affecting your brain. ”

Freddie caught the pillow and threw it back, grinning. “Says the sore loser”

Leo rolled his eyes, already heading toward the hallway. “I’m going to bed before you two start another wrestling match. Goodnight, everyone.”

Emma stretched, her arms reaching toward the ceiling. “Yeah, I’m calling it a night, too. See you all in the morning.”

One by one, the team dispersed, each heading to their respective rooms. Robert lingered for a moment, his gaze sweeping over the common room. The quiet hum of the base’s systems was a comforting sound, a reminder of how far they’d come. He smiled faintly before turning off the lights and making his way to his room.

In her room, Emma sat at her desk, her fingers brushing over the Aetheric band on her wrist. She stared at it for a moment, her thoughts drifting to the day’s events. The arcade, the laughter, the sense of normalcy—it had been a good day. She sighed before climbing into bed. Within minutes, she was asleep, her breathing slow and steady.

Down the hall, Freddie was already sprawled across his bed, one arm dangling off the side. His room was a mess—clothes strewn across the floor, holographic game posters glowing faintly on the walls—but he didn’t care. He was too tired to care. “Night, room,” he mumbled to no one in particular before drifting off.

Sophia sat cross-legged on her bed, her eyes closed as she meditated. The day had been… nice. Unusual, but nice. She allowed herself a small smile before lying down, her telepathic senses quiet for the first time in weeks. Sleep came quickly, wrapping her in its peaceful embrace.

In his room, Robert sat on the edge of his bed, his mind racing despite his exhaustion. He thought about the team, about how far they’d come, and about the challenges they still faced. But for now, they were safe. That was enough. He lay back, staring at the ceiling for a moment before closing his eyes and letting sleep take him.

Far from the quiet halls of the Guardians’ base, the Reapers gathered in a dimly lit warehouse on the outskirts of Imperial City. The air was thick with tension, the faint hum of machinery and the occasional clink of weapons the only sounds breaking the silence. The warehouse was a stark contrast to the vibrant, neon-lit streets of the city—its walls were lined with crates of weapons, and the floor was littered with discarded tech and tools. This was their staging ground, a place where plans were made and lives were traded like currency.

Michael Voss stood at the center of the room, his cybernetic arm gleaming under the harsh light of a single overhead bulb. His sharp features were set in a grim expression as he studied the holographic map of the Guardians’ base that floated in the air before him. The map was detailed, showing every entrance, security checkpoint, and sensor array. His mind already calculating the best approach.

“This is it,” he said, his voice low and steady, cutting through the silence. “We hit them tonight. No mistakes.”

The other Reapers gathered around, their faces illuminated by the glow of the hologram. Sylas Kane, the tech specialist, sat at a makeshift workstation, her fingers flying over a holographic keyboard. Her face was lit by the blue light of the screens, her expression focused as she analyzed the base’s schematics.

“I’ve analyzed the base’s security systems,” Sylas said, her voice calm but confident. “We can approach from the east side. There’s a blind spot in their sensor coverage. I can disable the sensors remotely, but we’ll have a narrow window—maybe ten minutes before they notice something’s wrong.”

Michael nodded, his cybernetic arm flexing slightly as he clenched his fist. “Good. Once the sensors are down, Mara will place the explosives at the weak points in the perimeter. After that, we go in for the kill.”

Mara, the stealth expert, leaned against a crate, her cloaking device shimmering faintly as she adjusted it. Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried a deadly edge. “I’ll plant the charges and take out any guards silently. Just make sure you don’t get in my way.”

Rook, the hulking brute of the group, cracked his knuckles, a feral grin spreading across his face. “I’ll handle the heavy lifting. If any of those kids try to fight back, they’ll regret it.” Dexter, sat perched on a crate, his rifle resting across his lap. he ran a hand over the sleek weapon, “I’ll cover you from a distance,” he said, his tone cold and detached. “If anyone tries to run, they won’t get far.” Michael’s gaze swept over the group, his expression unreadable. “Remember, this isn’t just another job. Lord Abaddon wants them gone, and he doesn’t tolerate failure. We do this clean, we do this fast, and we don’t leave any witnesses.”

The Reapers nodded, their expressions serious. There was no room for error, no margin for hesitation. They were professionals, and they knew what was at stake.

The group moved out, their footsteps echoing through the empty streets as they made their way toward the Guardians’ base. The city was quiet, the neon lights casting long shadows across the pavement. Somewhere in the distance, a hover car sped by, its engine humming softly, but the Reapers paid it no mind. They moved with purpose, their movements precise and calculated.

Sylas led the way, his handheld device displaying a live feed of the base’s security systems. “Sensors are still active,” he said, his voice low. “We’ll need to stay in the shadows until I can disable them.”

Michael nodded. “Keep it quiet. We don’t want to tip them off.”

Sylas her fingers flying across the holo-display “sensor are down, Mara you are up”

Mara slipped ahead, her cloaking device rendering her nearly invisible in the darkness. She moved like a shadow, her footsteps silent as she scouted the perimeter. She places explosives around the base walls.

Dexter found a vantage point on a nearby hill, her rifle resting on the ledge as she peered through the scope. There is no movement or guards “looks like we are clear to go”

Rook cracked his neck, his massive frame looming in the shadows. “Let’s get this over with. I’m itching for a fight.”

Michael’s voice was cold and final. “Move in. And remember—no mistakes.”

the group moved in into the base up to the command center, their steps silent they reached the room hallways, each of the position themselves in front of each door, “on my mark we open the doors” Michael whispered, the doors opened and they started firing with their plasma blasters inside the room, suddenly the lights of the base turned on the team appearing outside in the hallway “I’m sorry were you looking for us?” said Robert with teasing grin, before the Michael and the others were able to react they were launched through hallways shattering the window dropping out building by Robert, Freddie and Joel Telekinetic and sonic force.

Their bodies tumbling through the air before landing hard on the ground below. Michael was the first to recover, his cybernetic arm sparking as he pushed himself to his feet. A portal opened in front of them, and the team stepped out, their expressions a mix of determination and defiance.

Michael dusted off his clothes, his crimson eyes glowing with barely contained rage. “You little brats,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re going to regret that.”

Rook charged at them, his massive frame barreling forward like a freight train. Joel stepped up to meet him, his fists clenched. “You want a fight? Let’s go!” Joel shouted, throwing a punch that landed squarely on Rook’s chest. The impact sent a shockwave through the air, but Rook barely flinched.

“Is that all you got?” Rook sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. He swung a massive fist at Joel, who barely managed to dodge in time. The ground cracked where Rook’s fist landed, and Joel stumbled back, his arms trembling from the force.

Meanwhile, Michael’s eyes glowed brighter as he focused his heat vision on Freddie. A searing beam of red energy shot toward him, but Robert reacted quickly, shoving Freddie out of the way. “Watch it!” Robert yelled, his own eyes glowing as he replicated Michael’s heat vision. The two beams clashed in midair, creating a blinding explosion of light and heat.

Freddie scrambled to his feet. “Thanks for the save!” he called out to Robert, before hurling a nearby chunk of rocks at Michael. Michael dodged effortlessly, his movements precise and calculated.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“You’re out of your league, kid,” Michael said, his voice cold. He fired another heat vision blast, forcing Robert to dive for cover.

Emma, seeing an opportunity, crouched and placed her hands on the ground. The earth beneath the Reapers’ feet turned to goo, causing them to sink. Mara, who had been lurking in the shadows, stumbled and cursed as her boots were swallowed by the muck. “What the—?” she began, but Emma wasn’t done. With a quick motion, she solidified the goo into concrete, trapping Mara and Sylas up to their knees. “Gotcha!” Emma said, a triumphant smile on her face.

But Sylas, the technopath, smirked as he raised his hand. “Cute trick,” she said, her voice calm. The base’s security systems suddenly came to life, the turrets on the walls swiveling to aim at the Guardians. “Let’s see how you handle this.”

The turrets opened fire, forcing the team to scatter. Freddie raised a telekinetic barrier, deflecting the blasts, but the strain was evident on his face. “I can’t keep this up forever!” he shouted.

Sophia, who had been observing the fight from a distance, closed her eyes and focused. Her telepathy reached out, probing the minds of the Reapers. She locked onto Sylas, sending a wave of mental pressure that made her stagger and lose focus, the turrets shutting down.

But Mara, now free from the concrete trap using her a laser gadget to free herself, activated her illusion powers. The air around Sophia shimmered, and suddenly, the telepath was surrounded by a swarm of shadowy figures. Sophia’s eyes widened as the illusions closed in, their forms shifting and twisting. “This isn’t real,” she muttered, trying to focus, but the illusions were overwhelming.

Dexter, perched on the nearby hill, adjusted his rifle’s scope. His telekinesis powers allowed him to curve the bullets midair, making them impossible to dodge. He fired a shot that whizzed past Freddie’s ear, forcing him to drop his barrier. “Stay still, kid,” she said, her voice cold. “This’ll be over faster.”

Leo and Luis, using their super speed, darted around the battlefield, trying to create distractions. Leo zipped past Rook, landing a series of quick punches, but the brute barely seemed to notice. “You’re gonna have to hit harder than that!” Rook roared, swinging a massive fist that sent Leo flying into a wall.

Luis tried to flank Michael, but he anticipated the move. With a burst of heat vision, he forced Luis to retreat, his uniform singed. “You’re fast,” Michael said, his voice dripping with disdain. “But not fast enough.”

The Guardians were putting up a fight, but the Reapers’ experience and coordination were taking their toll. Robert, realizing they were outmatched, shouted to the team. “Fall back! We can’t win this!”

Freddie, panting and sweating, nodded. “Yeah, I’m with you on that!”

But as the team retreated, Michael’s voice cut through the chaos. “You think it’s that easy?” he said, his eyes glowing brighter than ever. “You’re not going anywhere.”

The Reapers closed in, their powers and weapons at the ready. The team, battered and exhausted, knew they were in trouble. But even as they prepared for the worst, they weren’t ready to give up. Not yet.

As they tried to make their escape, Michael’s voice cut through the chaos. “Light it up!” he shouted.

Sylas, her technopathic powers already active, triggered the explosives she had planted around the base. The ground erupted in a deafening blast, sending the Guardians flying. The shockwave tore through the air, throwing debris and smoke in every direction. Robert hit the ground hard, his ears ringing and his vision blurring. He groaned, struggling to push himself up as the world spun around him.

“Guys…?” he croaked, his voice barely audible over the ringing in his ears. He looked around, his heart sinking as he saw the others sprawled on the ground, unmoving. Smoke and fire filled the air, the base crumbling around them.

Michael and the Reapers stepped through the smoke, their figures silhouetted against the flames. Michael’s eyes glowed faintly, a cruel smile playing on his lips. “This could’ve ended quickly,” he said, his voice dripping with disdain. “But don’t worry. I’ll put you out of your misery.”

Robert clenched his fists, his body trembling as he forced himself to his knees. His Aetheric band flickered faintly, a golden glow beginning to surround him. “You… you don’t get to win,” he growled, his voice shaky but defiant.

Michael’s eyes flared brighter, his heat vision charging. “Cute. But you’re outmatched, kid.”

Before Michael could unleash his attack, a blur of motion shot past Robert. It was Leo, his super speed kicking in as he tackled Michael to the ground. “Not so fast, laser eyes!” Leo shouted, his voice strained as he struggled to pin the Reaper down.

Michael snarled, his cybernetic arm slamming into Leo’s side and sending him flying. “Annoying little—”

He didn’t get to finish. Joel charged in, his sonic scream tearing through the air and forcing Michael to stagger back. “Stay down!” Joel yelled, his voice amplified by his powers.

But Michael wasn’t alone. Dexter stepped forward, his rifle aimed at Joel. With a flick of her wrist, he manipulated the trajectory of her shot; the bullet curving unnaturally to strike Joel in the shoulder. He cried out, collapsing to the ground.

“Joel!” Emma shouted, her hands glowing as she manipulated the surrounding debris, forming a barrier to shield him. But Sylas was already at work, her technopathic powers overriding the base’s systems. The barrier flickered and collapsed, leaving Emma exposed.

“Nice try,” Sylas said, her voice cold. “But you’re not winning this one.”

Freddie, struggling to his feet, raised his hands, his telekinesis lifting chunks of debris and hurling them at the Reapers. “Get away from them!” he shouted, his voice cracking with desperation.

Rook stepped forward, his massive frame shrugging off the debris like it was nothing. He grinned, cracking his knuckles. “You’re gonna have to do better than that, kid.”

With a roar, Rook charged at Freddie, his super strength sending shockwaves through the ground with each step. Fred- die barely managed to dodge, using his telekinesis to create a barrier. But Rook smashed through it like it was paper, grabbing Freddie by the arm and slamming him into the ground.

“Freddie!” Sophia shouted, her telepathy reaching out to Rook’s mind. She focused, trying to overwhelm him with a mental assault. But Mara was already on her, her illusions twisting Sophia’s perception. The world around her shifted, the ground crumbling beneath her feet as phantom figures closed in.

“You’re not the only one who can mess with minds,” Mara said, her voice echoing eerily.

Robert, still on his knees, watched helplessly as his team was picked apart. His Aetheric band flickered again, the golden glow growing brighter. He clenched his fists, his body trembling with effort. “No…” he muttered, his voice barely audible. “Not like this…”

Michael stepped forward, his eyes glowing brighter as he prepared to finish Robert off. “It’s over, kid. You never stood a chance.”

But Robert wasn’t ready to give up. Not yet. With a roar, he unleashed an energy building inside him. A powerful wave of golden light erupted from his body, slamming into the Reapers and sending them flying. The force of the blast tore through the smoke and debris, a golden beam of light shooting into the sky that could be seen for miles.

For a moment, the battlefield was still. The golden light from Robert’s blast faded, leaving the air thick with smoke and the acrid smell of burning debris. Robert lay unconscious on the ground, his Aetheric band flickering faintly. The rest of the team, battered and bruised, rushed to his side.

“Robert!” Joel shouted, his voice strained as he limped over, clutching his injured shoulder. He dropped to his knees beside Robert, his hands trembling as he checked for a pulse. “He’s alive, but he’s out cold.”

Emma knelt beside him, her hands glowing faintly as she used her matter manipulation to stabilize Robert’s injuries. “He pushed himself too hard,” she said, her voice tight with worry. “We need to get him to a medic, now.”

Freddie stumbled over, his face pale. “Is he gonna be okay?” he asked, his voice cracking.

“He will be,” Emma said, though her expression betrayed her uncertainty.

Sophia, her telepathy still reeling from Mara’s illusions, leaned heavily against a piece of rubble. “We need to get out of here,” she said, her voice weak but urgent. “If they come back…”

Leo and Luis, both bruised but still standing, kept watch, their super speed ready to react to any threat. “We’re sitting ducks out here,” Leo muttered, his eyes scanning the smoke- filled battlefield.

Meanwhile, Michael staggered to his feet, his cybernetic arm sparking faintly from the force of Robert’s blast. His eyes, still glowing faintly, narrowed as he stared at the spot where Robert had fallen. “What… was that?” he muttered, his voice low and tense. “That kind of power… it can’t be. They’re all supposed to be dead.”

His thoughts were interrupted by the distant hum of engines growing louder. He turned his head sharply. Ships—dozens of them—were approaching fast, their lights cutting through the smoke and darkness.

“This is the Imperial City Police!” a voice boomed over a loudspeaker. “Stand down and surrender immediately!”

The Reapers exchanged glances, their expressions grim. Rook cracked his neck, his massive frame tense. “What do we do, boss?” he asked, his voice a low growl.

Michael’s jaw tightened. “We go dark,” he said, his tone cold and decisive. “Mara!”

Mara didn’t need to be told twice. She reached into her belt and pulled out a handful of small smoke bombs, tossing them to the ground. Thick, billowing smoke erupted, enveloping the area in seconds. The Reapers moved like shadows, their training and experience allowing them to vanish into the chaos.

By the time the smoke cleared, they were gone.

The Imperial City Police ships landed on a wide perimeter around the battlefield, their lights flashing and sirens blaring. Officers in tactical gear poured out, weapons drawn as they secured the area.

“Clear!” one officer shouted, his voice carrying over the noise. Another officer spotted the Guardians and gestured to his team. “We’ve got more people over here! kids—wounded, one unconscious!”

Medics rushed forward, their equipment in hand. Joel and Emma stepped back to give them space, their faces etched with worry. “His my brother,” Freddie said, his voice tight. “You need to help him.”

One of the medics nodded, kneeling beside Robert and beginning to assess his condition. Another medic turned to Freddie. “Are you hurt?” she asked, her tone gentle but professional.

Freddie shook her head, though his hands were still trembling. “I’m fine. Just… make sure he’s okay.”

As the medics worked, an officer approached the team, his expression a mix of concern and authority. “What happened here?” he asked, his voice firm but not unkind.

Sophia stepped forward, her telepathy still recovering, but her voice was steady. “We were attacked,” she said. “They… they were after us.”

The officer’s eyes narrowed. “Do you know who they were?”

Leo shook his head. “No, but they were dangerous. Really dangerous.”

The officer nodded, his expression grim. “We’ll get to the bottom of this. For now, let’s get you all to safety.”

As the team was helped onto one of the ships, Joel glanced back at the battlefield, his jaw clenched. “This isn’t over,” he muttered. “Not by a long shot.”

Emma placed a hand on his arm, her expression determined. “We’ll figure this out. Together.”

The ships lifted off, their lights cutting through the night as they carried the Guardians to safety. But the battle had left its mark—on the city, on the team, and on Robert, whose Aetheric band still flickered faintly, a reminder of the power he unleashed.
