Chapter 1: The Uncomfortable Truth

Gray Hawk Island floated three thousand feet above the earth, suspended in the endless sky by ancient technology no one fully understood. Once stable and proud among the higher sky territories, the island now hung lower than most, drifting dangerously closer to the surface below.

Massive web-engine machines had been deployed across the island's outer edges. Towering mechanical spires and steel anchor rigs extended outward, each connected by enormous glowing silk-web cables that stretched into the sky. These machines hummed and strained as they slowly pulled the entire island upward. Thick strands of reinforced webbing connected the engines to floating sky anchors above, tightening with every passing hour. The sound of gears turning and silk tensioning echoed across the city as the island inched higher.

Spider-web patterns decorated every building, woven into stone, metal, and glass, a tribute to the island's protectors and its leader, Madam Spider, who had kept the people safe for thirty years. Her symbol was everywhere: on banners, carved into towers, and glowing faintly across the island's protective structures.

But even with the machines working tirelessly, worry spread among the citizens.

From the lower edges of Gray Hawk Island, people could see the creeping pink smoke rising from below, a toxic haze drifting upward from the deadly surface world. That smoke meant only one thing: they were descending too close to the earth.

Far beneath the floating island, the ruined surface crawled with monstrous Barrakudo. Their distant roars sometimes echoed upward through the clouds. Every citizen knew that if the island sank any lower, the creatures below would eventually reach them.

  So the web-engines pulled harder.

  The island creaked.

And all of Gray Hawk waited, watching the sky above and the monsters below.

  Within the Web fortress.

Sadya stood at the edge of the training hall's observation platform, looking up at the clouds. From below, she could see other floating islands, Cloudreach to the east, Stormcrest to the north. The sky was vast and beautiful.

  Training, however, was not.

"RECRUITS! ATTENTION!" Captain Long Legs' voice boomed from inside.

Sadya sighed, unwrapped a piece of gum, and walked back into the hall. Sadya blew a bubble the size of her head and popped it with her finger.

The training facility sat in Gray Hawk's military district, a massive building with web-patterned architecture and spider motifs carved into every stone pillar.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

She took her place in line with the other Webguard trainees. Weaver stood to her left, his mouth covered as always.

Plemeton was across the formation, his cybernetic spider-armor gleaming in the light streaming through the high windows.

Madam Spider observed from her elevated platform, her multiple eyes scanning the recruits. The leader of Gray Hawk was an imposing figure, part human, part spider, with the wisdom of someone who'd protected this island through countless threats.

"Today," Captain Long Legs announced, extending his legs to tower over them, "we work on sustained combat formations. You will hold your positions for"

Sadya blew another bubble the size of her head and popped it with her finger.

Everyone turned to look at her.

"You're doing it again." Madam Spider said from across the training hall, her multiple eyes narrowing.

"Doing what?" Sadya stretched the pink gum between her fingers.

"Making that face. Like you'd rather be anywhere else."

Sadya blinked. "I would rather be anywhere else. This is really boring, I'm concerned about the island dropping so clsoe to the surface."

The other recruits gasped. Captain Long Legs, who'd been demonstrating a combat stance, froze mid-motion.

"Sadya!" Weaver hissed from beside her, his covered mouth muffling his panic.

"What? She asked." Sadya looked around genuinely confused. "Was I supposed to lie?"

Madam Spider's expression didn't change. She'd known Sadya since birth. "It's alright, we have out spider drones working overtime, we have managed to pull the island back up some several feet. It's not much but it's a start, howeevr everynow and then it's like a force is pull us back down."

Sadya "That doesn't sound promising, guess will all die soon."

  Weaver "Sadya!"

But Sadya was already walking toward the exit, unwrapping a fresh piece of gum. "I'm uncomfortable now. I'm going to leave."

"SADYA, NO..." Weaver lunged forward playfully, grabbing her arm.

Captain Long Legs extended his leg across the room, blocking the door.

Plemeton landed between her and the exit in a mechanical whir, his spider-armor glinting. "Training isn't optional."

Sadya's face went red. Not from embarrassment about leaving, from Plemeton being this close. "You smell like metal and... is that coconut shampoo?"

  "I, what?" Plemeton's confidence faltered.

"This is worse. I'm more uncomfortable now." Sadya tried to duck under his arm.

  "CATCH HER!" Madam Spider commanded.

What followed was chaos. Captain Long Legs extended both legs. Weaver dove. Plemeton activated his extra cybernetic limbs. But Sadya was already blowing a massive bubble, encasing herself inside it and floating toward the ceiling.

"Can't we have ONE normal training session?" Madam Spider pinched the bridge of her nose.

From inside her bubble, Sadya's voice was muffled. "This is nice actually. Quiet. Nobody asking me questions I have to answer honestly."

"She's going to be a Webguard," Weaver muttered. "I worry about future."
