001 IMPATIENCE

Atoms float around, bump into each other. They stick together, spend some time and have a chemical reaction. Then these atoms later evolve or depart, ending up floating somewhere else. Sometimes they even bump into each other to hurt or destroy themselves. In this constant movement time passes. All slowly dissolves or heals. Creating an entirely new world. Everything is set in motion and never stops. Time never does. And that's how all goes. Life runs its course and we don’t have any say in it. No one can get away from this state. We all exist because we exist. Simple cause and effect. We can’t change the motion, but we sure can determine by a combination of numbers of this cause measure time pinpoint effect and reaction. Mathematical equations and their power to determine the facts. There's only one fact that is out there. A true authentic fact for we don't need equations to confirm the truth. I think, therefore I am.

I am not sure though. In theory, determining a future through examination of calculated actions should be the way you get to achieve desired results. A repeat action taken, nurtured, carefully planned. In time it should take you towards it.

It’s simple logic!! It should work!!!

  Crunch!

“Miss Aisaka…what are you doing??” Mr. Karin stared at me dumbfounded.

It was followed by mixed expressions from other eyes in the classroom. Faces wearing expressions of surprise, bewilderment, discontent even. There was a single one different expression from the rest - bright malicious sneer! Coming from the next table over to my right. His name: Yuji.

A pretty dumb name if you ask me.

“Ughhh! This useless thing broke!” My face wildly flushed red.

Mr. Karin stepped forward, looking at me. Then he glanced down at the floor beneath my feet. His eyes followed the trail of the broken pieces, and back at me.

The broken pieces of my technology development project lay there unrecognizable. Once they were a model of an invention, prepared for weeks. Nurtured and built with my own two hands. I spent many hours…days to perfect it. In the end it turned into broken trash under my feet.

“I told you to be patient...” Mr. Karin’s voice was too calm.

“What can I do? It broke down!” I threw my hands in the air in frustration.

Black and grayish pieces of material that once resembled some shape. What shape it was once upon a time. Not really able to tell anymore.

“That awful material didn’t match my predictions…” I said my voice pitched higher than normal, red flashing through my cheeks. One of my legs slightly kicked the details on the ground.

“What exactly was wrong?” Mr. Karin sighed.

I stretched out my hand. Towards a notebook on the table in front of me.

“Please! Take a look!” I gave that notebook to Mr. Karin. I tried to be as calm as I could but I was furious. So damn furious at this whole ordeal!

My development project professor took the notebook and carefully looked through it.

“My math isn’t wrong!” I said confidently while watching him read. “I should have succeeded but that stupid material is faulty!” I complained. Shifting my feet made more sounds of cracking.

The other eyes of my classmates were staring at me. Some of them are looking at my outburst. There also were others. Ignoring me and looking at their own work. Uninterested. But the ones staring at me felt strong on my back. I especially felt the stares from overjoyed Yuji and a girl who sat besides me.

  Her name: Athena.

My eyes glanced sideways at the blonde head next table over.

Yuji brightly showed me a malicious thumbs up!

Holding back my nerves to roll my eyes I glanced at the opposite side.

My assigned partner who was also a blonde watched me with big eyes. Her expression still. She was holding herself. Waiting quietly for my outburst to pass.

“Your numbers are indeed correct! I see no issue.” Mr. Karin complimented me with eyes still reading my notes. Though his expression was loud saying that I did make a mistake. “But it’s true. It won’t work! This whole project is based on the ability to recreate the number you have presented. It’s not the model at fault but rather you have chosen an impossible task.” He said with eyes trailing from me and then back to the floor.

Mr. Karin leaned to pick up something round.

“If it worked on paper. It should have worked on practice as well!” I narrowed my gaze.

“Technically…yes...but only if this number would be as precise in real life.” Mr. Karin picked something up. Then he turned back to my notes to show my failure. Pointing to a certain number I had in my equations.

My eyes turned towards it as my emotions left me, replaced with empty calculations. Focusing on them my mind was thinking solutions.

“To get that number…I should find the material that represents it in real life…which would mean that I would need to create not only the whole invention but materials as well. Which would lead me towards more numbers that eventually lead to this number…I would need to match the exact number to follow my instructions…” I started rambling aloud. Thinking of the way this could still work.

The materials I have at my disposal will never work. But to produce the new formula and create it will be another trial and error. This project does have a time limit. Though, I am not supposed to create a new material but a new technology project. If I continue this train of thought. I will fail due to not having enough time to finish it.

“New material would be an accomplishment in itself but Rory…” Mr. Karin called out to me to make me listen.

I paused my thoughts, looking up.

“I am sure you are aware of where that will lead you.” Aware of my thought process Mr. Karin spoke to me. “Rather focus on something achievable, like this!” Mr. Karin wanted me to drop the idea of searching on this project further and extended his hand passing the piece he picked up to me.

I extended my hand to take it.

It was a small piece of a camera. More what’s left of it.

  I stared at it reluctantly.
