Chapter 297: Big boom

Ronan looked down at Spinodoxis. What was left of it, at least. The mini-boss was somehow still alive, but he doubted that would be the case for long. His new spell had been more than he’d bargained for. The explosion was even bigger than against the lass mini-boss, despite it not being a critical hit, leading him to believe that the speed it had been fired at affected the damage.

It was something to consider when he didn’t have a bunch of giant sea monsters actively trying to kill him. He started launching rainbow bombs left and right to take out the storms of flying fish that started throwing themselves at him again. Most of them were focused on attacking the kaiju that was bleeding into the water. These fish really don’t have any loyalty… I’m glad I’m not on their side.

He had basically mastered his new spell. It was messy and he was sure there were better ways to blow big monsters up, but he had made it himself. Ronan was proud of that. Unfortunately there was very little time to celebrate as the remaining mini-boss launched a fresh assault. This time, however, Ronan was more than ready for the bastard.

He started forming another one of his new spells while avoiding its attacks and running through the air. Before he could finish the channeling the turtle kaiju unleashed another flamethrower attack. Ronan just about avoided the worst of the flames but a few caught him on the calves and set his skin aflame. The pain was manageable but made it a little more difficult to finish the spell. A few seconds later he had it in his hands and launched it without thinking. The mark on Tentoise would ensure he hit his target.

The turtle proved far more durable than the dino-shark, likely due to its higher level and also the tough shell that covered most of its body. All of the tentacles gathered around the mark were eviscerated when the spell exploded, and large cracks ran down the shell. The monster roared in pain and stared at Ronan with a gaze filled with burning fury.

He didn’t particularly care to be stared at like that. The turtle unleashed another jet of flames, this time closer to black than purple. He didn’t want to get hit so he increased his speed and stopped focusing on the spell he was forming. It blew up in his hands and charred his skin slightly but as it hadn’t been near completion the backlash wasn’t that damaging.

Ronan grew worried when the stream of black flames didn’t stop. He ran for about half a minute until he suddenly stumbled while making one of his mana platforms. His recovery was quick and he leapt to the next within a second, but that was still enough time for the turtle’s flamethrower to nip him on the arse.

Like the purple flames before them, the almost-black flames clung to him like glue. Unfortunately the pain was about ten times worse and he could feel them melting through his flesh. Seconds after they had torched him he could smell his burning flesh. Not wanting to get hit with another dose of the flamethrower he redoubled his speed.

Another fifteen seconds later the flamethrower finally ended. The turtle roared again, a mix of pain and rage. Ronan looked down at the mini-boss and saw that it was gearing up for something else. From the cracks in its shell a strange purple light was glowing. He didn’t want to know what it was about to do.

Ronan rapidly finished forming the spell, given that he had a window of time in which to do so. With the death of the first mini-boss the water jet-firing whirlpools had stopped and there was less chaos to avoid.

He managed to let it fly before his foe finished gathering energy for whatever it had been planning to do. The second spell soared through the air towards the oversized kaiju and curved on an improbable arc as the Mark of the Eternal Seeker drew it back from the air where Ronan had tossed it, right into the gaping wound left by the first spell that had hit Tentoise.

There was a half-second delay after the spell vanished inside the broken shell and the detonation. Ronan’s common sense told him that there was nothing to worry about but he did almost miss a beat as he watched it disappear without blowing up. Then the enormous mutated turtle suddenly buckled, dropping into the water as its shell collapsed inwards. Then it vanished, a million tiny shards and chunks of vaporised flesh blasting outwards in all directions.

A single fragment of shell struck Ronan’s cheek. It burned for a few moments before the pain faded, leaving only his satisfaction at a well-fought battle against the two strongest opponents he’d ever faced. A brief observation of the water that now stretched out as far as he could see in all directions informed him that a third kaiju had not appeared, so he took the opportunity to check the kill notifications.

  +5000 Luck on level up

The class evolution was rather basic and Ronan took it without hesitation. He hadn’t expected to go up in rarity again so soon after getting his first galactic class. That he’d even earned something above celestial was still shocking. He was once again reminded that he hadn’t actually put his gambling to the test, though he wasn’t sure how it operated after the evolution to Paragon Fate-Dancer. He knew he might get an opportunity to test it out soon as there was no doubt another monster to come. The stage had not yet ended.

  Congratulations for reaching Lv.400!

You have reached the third threshold for your race! Race will evolve…

Please select an option for your race evolution from the following:

  Juvenile Chronate (D)

Chronates are born in the gaps between time and space, where reality is but a suggestion. They can naturally manipulate their personal flow of time, as well as more easily slip through the barriers between dimensions. Many juvenile chronates die while learning to use their powers, accidentally falling into dimensions they should not have entered. Chronates take many forms, but usually they resemble the most populous species in the vicinity of their birthplace.

All juvenile chronates are born with affinities towards [Time] and [Dimensional] mana

Chronates possess a unique stat called Chron which allows them to manipulate their personal timeflow, and at greater stages of evolution and power, the timeflow of other beings and objects and even the multiversal flow of time

Chronates have a 3% chance to inflict the [Time Bleed] effect when landing successful strikes on their foes

+60 Vitality, +35 Resistance, +30 Tenacity, +45 Free Stat Points on level up

Both of his evolutions were fairly painless. He was exceptionally grateful for that fact, especially given how excruciating the initial race change had been. Ronan wasn’t sure he could have handled that and stayed in the air.

None of his masteries had gained a tier, though quite a few of them were on the cusp. He was curious to see what reaching the tenth tier in a mastery would bring. Mana was the closest.

That was why he was oddly grateful to hear a bellowing roar that shook the world and knocked him from the platform he had just formed beneath his hopping foot. Once he had stabilised himself, Ronan cast his gaze down to the ocean, but saw nothing. Then he saw a dark wave covering the water, approaching fast. No, not a dark wave, that’s—The surface exploded as a smaller-than-expected creature burst from it, leaping directly at him.

His next foe had come with express delivery.
