Chapter 2: The Heartstone Test

The castle hallway smelled of smoke, scorched wood, and lingering blood. Broken shields and splintered weapons littered the floor, the aftermath of the siege pressing like a weight on Sei’s chest. He followed Eva Brimholde, stepping cautiously, still reeling from the events of the chamber.

The woman’s sea-emerald hair caught the torchlight as she moved with precise, measured steps. Her shield, embossed with the tortle emblem, glinted faintly. Every movement radiated calm authority. Sei couldn’t help but stare, still trying to process the whirlwind that had brought him here.

“So… where exactly are we going?” Sei asked, his voice hoarse from the earlier fight and lingering adrenaline.

“Somewhere you can… be tested,” Eva replied, her tone clipped but not unkind. “The king requested it. You may not understand yet, but this is necessary.”

Sei swallowed. Tested? For what? He opened his mouth to ask, but Eva kept her eyes forward, ignoring his questions as if they were trivial.

The hallway opened into a vast chamber, untouched by the siege. At its center stood a crystalline structure, enormous and gleaming. Its surface shimmered with a calm, internal light that seemed to hum through the floor beneath Sei’s feet.

Eva gestured to it. “This is the Heartstone. It has not been damaged even during today’s attack. It will show us what… you are capable of.”

Sei’s eyes widened. “You expect me to just… touch it?”

Eva’s lips tightened. “Yes. Touch it. Let it react to you.”

Hesitation clawed at him. He glanced around the room, the shard-like crystal towering over him, its glow gentle but commanding. “Is this… safe?” he whispered, though the words were almost swallowed by the hum of power.

Eva’s gaze softened ever so slightly, but she didn’t answer. “There is only one way to find out,” she said.

Swallowing, Sei extended his hand. The moment his fingers brushed the crystal, a tingling warmth spread through him. The Heartstone pulsed, brimming with light, the hum growing louder until it was a resonance that vibrated through his bones.

The glow intensified, filling the room with a blinding radiance. Sei staggered backward instinctively as the crystal’s energy wrapped around him, flowing into his body, urging, testing, and probing. He felt it—the surge of something immense, unfamiliar, and frighteningly powerful.

Eva grunted as a force knocked her off her feet, the shockwave rattling the chamber. She hit the stone floor, scrambling to her hands, eyes wide with disbelief. “By the gods…” she whispered, standing as quickly as she could.

Sei’s heart raced. The pulse slowed, dimmed slightly, but the chamber still shimmered. His hand tingled, sweat running down his temple. “Did… did I just—?” he began, voice trembling.

Eva cut him off, her tone sharp. “We don’t have time to figure that out here! Move!” She sprinted toward the king’s chamber, glancing over her shoulder to ensure Sei was following.

“I—wait!” Sei called, stumbling after her. “What just happened? What did I do?”

She ignored him, urgency driving her every step. “No time for questions! Just keep up!”

They reached the king’s chamber, battered as it was, where the monarch leaned heavily against his chair. The remaining council members gathered, watching the two approach.

Eva caught her breath, then reported in rapid-fire:

  • “The Heartstone reacted to him.”

  •
  • “The energy… surged outward, nearly knocking me off my feet.”

  •
  • “No structural damage, but this… this is unprecedented.”

  •

The king’s eyes widened, worry creasing his face. “You mean… this stranger, summoned only hours ago, has an affinity for our Heartstone?”

Sei’s stomach dropped. He was still reeling from the surge, still unsure what he had done. “I… I didn’t mean to…”

“Enough,” the king interrupted, his voice firm despite exhaustion. “We have no time to deliberate in fragments. Council, we convene immediately. This is now an emergency.”

Sei felt the weight settle on him like never before. Every decision, every motion here carried consequence. And for the first time, he realized that this world did not forgive mistakes—even minor ones.

The council members nodded gravely, murmuring among themselves. Sei followed Eva’s lead, heart hammering, mind racing. Whatever this world demanded of him, he had no choice but to meet it.

And deep down, a flicker of determination sparked: he would survive. He would learn. And he would control this power—no matter the cost.
