Chapter 92 - The Shadow in the Core

  The clearing rippled—

  not with power,

  but with pain.

Alya clutched Cael's arm with one hand,

  Rian's wrist with the other,

her own aura flickering wildly between brilliant gold and creeping black.

  The corruption was moving.

  Fast.

  Too fast.

Cael saw the dark veins crawling up her neck.

  His heart almost stopped.

  "Alya—

  Alya look at me—

  you're changing—"

She met his eyes with a trembling smile.

  "I know."

  Rian swore under his breath.

  "This is bad.

  This is—this is REALLY bad—

Ayla, you're pulling in more than you can purify—

  the corruption's eating you alive—"

  Alya shook her head.

  "No.

  I'm just... seeing more clearly."

  But her voice was thinner,

  like something inside was slipping.

Cael cupped her face with both hands,

  voice breaking.

  "Stay with me.

  Stay HERE.

  Don't disappear—"

  Her breath hitched.

  She grabbed his hands.

  "I'm here.

  I promise."

But the Devourer's third core pulsed—

  and Alya flinched,

as if something tugged her consciousness downward.

  Rian Sees the Truth

Rian tightened his grip on her wrist.

  "Alya.

  Look at me."

  Alya blinked, eyes glassy.

  Rian's expression twisted—

fear, anger, grief all knotted together.

"Your essence is mixing with the Devourer's.

  Too deeply.

  You're not just purifying him—

  you're touching his soul."

  Cael whipped toward Rian.

  "How do you know that—?!"

  Rian swallowed,

his own aura flickering with dark-blue cracks.

  "Because...

  I'm seeing it too."

  Alya's eyes widened.

  "You're... seeing the memories?"

  Rian nodded, breath shaky.

  "Not just memories.

  Voices.

  Whispers.

  His mind."

He pressed his free hand to his temple.

  "I think...

  the Devourer's heart remembers us."

  Cael tensed.

  "Us?"

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

  Rian met Ayla's eyes.

  "The Triad.

Our resonance is linking with his—

it's pulling his past to the surface."

  Alya's breath faltered.

  "You're seeing the first Triad..."

  Rian nodded.

"And they look a little too much like us."

  The Devourer Fights Itself

  The creature staggered,

  stone plates cracking wide,

revealing more of the humanoid shape beneath.

  Its golden eye flickered violently.

  The corrupted fire core pulsed.

  Then—

  something inside the Devourer screamed.

  And it wasn't the monster.

  It was a human voice.

  Alya froze.

  "That's—

  that's the heart—

the person he used to be—"

  Cael grabbed her arm.

  "Alya, stop!

If you sync deeper, the corruption will swallow you too!"

  But Alya stepped forward.

  "No.

  Listen—"

  The Devourer's monstrous voice roared:

  "HEART—STOP—

  STOP TRYING TO SEE ME—

STOP TRYING TO SAVE WHAT IS BROKEN—"

  But through the cracks,

  the human voice cried out:

  "PLEASE—

  PLEASE GET OUT—

  YOU'LL DIE—

  GO—RUN—RUN—"

  Alya whispered:

  "No.

  We're not leaving you."

The Devourer slammed a massive stone fist into the ground—

  CRASH—

  —but the human voice wailed:

  "NO—NO—STOP—

  STOP USING MY BODY—

  STOP HURTING THEM—"

  Alya's heart clenched.

  Cael stared in shock.

  Rian's eyes widened.

  "Holy shit...

  the Devourer is fighting itself."

  Alya whispered:

  "He's still in there..."

  Cael added softly:

"...and he doesn't want to kill us."

  The Devourer screamed again—

its body splitting between monstrous rage

and the broken soul trapped inside.

  The Corruption Pulls Ayla Down

Alya pressed a hand to her chest, gasping.

  Her heartbeat faltered.

  Her vision blurred.

  Her breath hitched.

The corruption was dragging her inward.

  Into the Devourer's soul.

  Rian clutched her hand desperately.

  "AYLA—DON'T YOU DARE—

  STAY WITH US—"

Cael wrapped his arms around her waist.

  "Alya—Alya look at me—

  DON'T GO—"

  Her voice trembled.

  "I—I can see him—

  he's calling me—

  he... he recognizes our resonance—"

  Cael's grip shook.

  "NO—

Ayla you can't follow that voice—

  you can't—"

  Alya's eyes fluttered half-closed.

  "He's...

  the heart...

  like me..."

  Rian snarled.

  "We're your heart too!

  Cael and I—

WE are your anchor, don't forget that—!"

  Alya choked back a sob.

  "I—

  I know—

but if we don't purify him—

  he'll be trapped forever—

and the world will break because of it—"

  Cael grabbed her shoulders.

"We'll find a way that DOESN'T kill you!"

  Alya whispered:

  "What if there isn't one?"

  Cael's face crumpled.

  Rian's voice broke.

  "Ayla...

  don't say that..."

  The Devourer's Identity Emerges

The Devourer's fire core cracked open—

revealing a human silhouette inside the flames.

  Not monstrous.

  Wounded.

  Fading.

  Alya gasped.

  "That's him—

  the original heart—

the one who lost his Triad—"

The faint figure raised its head.

Its voice echoed with agonizing clarity:

  "Heart of the new Triad...

  please...

  leave me."

  Alya shook her head violently.

  "No.

I won't do what the roots forced you to do.

  I won't abandon anyone."

The Devourer's monstrous voice roared in fury:

  "STOP—

STOP TOUCHING WHAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU—"

  The human voice interrupted desperately:

  "NO—

  HEAR ME—

I AM TRYING TO KILL THEM—

  RUN—RUN—PLEASE—"

  Alya stepped forward.

  "No."

She touched the stone just above the fire core.

Cael and Rian yelled at the same time:

  "Alya NO—!"

  The corruption surged—

  violently—

  tearing at her aura.

Black streaks shot up her arms.

  Her irises flickered with shadow.

  The Devourer screamed:

  "YOU WILL FALL—

  YOU WILL BREAK—

  JUST AS WE DID—"

Alya's voice broke into a sob.

  "I'm not you."

  Cael held her tighter.

Rian braced her from the other side.

  Alya whispered:

"And you don't have to be this, either."

  The Choice Approaches

The Seal's fading voice resonated faintly:

  "AYLA...

YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

  THE CORRUPTION GROWS."

Alya trembled, staring at the Devourer—

  at the man trapped inside.

  She whispered:

  "I can pull him out."

  Cael's heart shattered.

  "Alya—

  if you go that deep—

  you'll be trapped with him—

  or worse—"

  Rian's voice cracked.

  "And if you're corrupted—

  the Triad collapses—

  and we all die."

  Alya shook.

  "I know."

But she lifted her hand again anyway.

  "Still...

I can't leave him in there."

  Cael grabbed her arm.

  "AYLA—PLEASE—

  DON'T SACRIFICE YOURSELF—

  NOT FOR HIM—

  NOT FOR ANYONE—"

Alya stared at him with tears falling.

  "Cael...

  I'm the heart."

Rian clenched his teeth, voice breaking.

  "Alya...

  don't do this..."

  She squeezed both their hands.

"I'm not choosing him over you."

  She looked at the Devourer.

  "I'm choosing compassion over cruelty."

  Her aura flared—

  gold and black twisting violently.

  Cael screamed:

  "AYLA—STOP—!!"

  But Ayla stepped forward.

  Toward the Devourer.

  Toward the trapped heart.

  Toward her own corruption.

  And whispered:

  "I'm coming for you."
