The Devourer staggered back as the Triad's joined light gathered again.
Not destructive this time—
not sharp—
but warm.
Balancing.
Purifying.
It recoiled violently.
"NO—
YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU TOUCH—
YOU KNOW NOT WHAT I WAS—"
Alya held Cael and Rian's hands tighter.
Her voice cracked:
"Then tell us."
The Devourer's body froze.
Its remaining three corrupted cores throbbed like diseased hearts.
The creature lowered its head—
slowly,
trembling,
as if the truth itself hurt.
"I WAS...
ONCE...
THE THIRD."
Silence crashed across the battlefield.
Alya's breath disappeared.
Cael's eyes widened in horror.
Rian whispered:
"...No way..."
The Last Triad's Fall
The Devourer lifted its face.
For the first time,
the shifting stone cracked enough
to reveal a faint humanoid shape beneath.
Not a monster.
A man.
Or what remained of one.
"I WAS THE HEART.
THE ONE WHO LOVED TOO MUCH."
Alya's pulse stuttered.
"You...
you were a Convergence heart...?
Like me?"
"YES."
It pointed at the pulsing corrupted core in its chest.
"THIS LIGHT...
WAS ONCE GOLD."
Cael felt his stomach drop.
This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.
Rian whispered, barely audible:
"...they failed, didn't they..."
The Devourer's remaining cores flickered.
"THE BALANCE BROKE.
THE ANCHOR COULD NOT HOLD.
THE SHADOW BEGAN TO FALL."
Alya trembled.
Cael squeezed her hand.
Rian stared at the creature with haunted eyes.
The Devourer continued:
"THE FIRST TRIAD TRIED TO DESTROY THEIR ENEMY.
AND IN DOING SO—
DESTROYED THEMSELVES."
Alya whispered:
"...you became the enemy."
"I BECAME WHAT I TRIED TO KILL."
Silence swallowed the clearing.
The Devourer's voice cracked deeper.
"THE HEART WAS CONSUMED FIRST."
Alya's breath hitched.
Cael moved closer instinctively.
Rian whispered:
"...and now it's happening to Ayla."
The Devourer turned its head toward her.
"YES.
HER BALANCE FLICKERS.
HER LIGHT CRACKS.
SHE WALKS MY PATH."
Alya's hands shook violently.
"No—
No—
I won't—
I won't become you—"
Rian grabbed her wrist.
Cael held her waist.
Rian snarled:
"She isn't alone."
Cael whispered:
"She has us."
The Devourer's tone softened—
just for a heartbeat.
"I...
once said the same."
And that—
more than anything—
made Alya's chest ache.
The Second Core Awakens
The Devourer's water-corrupted core burst open—
BOOOOOOM—
sending a tidal wave of pressure
through the clearing.
The Triad barrier shook.
Cael doubled over with a cry.
Alya screamed:
"CAEL—!!"
His eyes rolled back—
his resonance collapsing.
Rian grabbed him,
but Cael's body convulsed from the strain.
Rian shouted:
"He's losing consciousness—
Alya he's going—"
Alya cupped Cael's face with trembling hands.
"Stay with me—
please—
please—"
Cael fought to breathe.
"It's—too much—
my heart—
it's—slipping—"
Alya felt his soul flicker through the Link.
Fear. Pain.
And love.
Her voice broke:
"No—
Cael—
I need you—
I'm not strong enough without you—"
Cael's hand reached for hers weakly.
"You're...
the strongest person I've ever known..."
His fingers fell away.
Alya screamed.
"NO—!!"
Her aura flared—
erratic—
cracking with black corruption.
Rian grabbed her shoulders.
"Alya—STOP—
you're pulling EVERYONE'S resonance—
you'll kill us—!"
Alya sobbed uncontrollably.
"I CAN'T—
I CAN'T DO THIS—
NOT WITHOUT HIM—"
Rian shouted in her face:
"THEN LET ME HELP YOU!"
He pressed his forehead to hers,
forcing the Triad Link to shift—
forcing himself into Cael's stabilizing place.
"Use me.
LET ME CARRY IT—
I CAN DO THIS—
I CAN—"
The Link flared violently.
Rian screamed in agony—
but didn't let go.
Alya grabbed both boys' hands,
tears streaming down her face.
"No—
No—
I refuse—
I REFUSE THIS ENDING—"
The Purification Attempt Begins
Alya pressed her hands together—
forcing the Triad triangle to stabilize.
The world shook.
The Devourer hissed.
"DO NOT TRY TO SAVE ME."
Alya lifted her head, eyes blazing.
"We aren't saving YOU."
Cael stirred faintly—
still unconscious,
but breathing.
"We're saving HIM."
The Devourer froze.
Alya stepped forward,
her aura exploding with gold-white light.
And she placed her glowing hand
on the Devourer's corrupted core.
"LET.
HIM.
GO."
The Devourer screamed—
a sound of a thousand broken hearts.
Rian's resonance cracked violently.
Alya felt her own soul tearing—
but she didn't let go.
Cael's hand twitched in hers.
She whispered:
"I'm not losing you.
Any of you."
And the Triad's first attempt to purify the Devourer began.
