This is it, the very last Story of the Week. And I’m breaking one of my main rules, which was that each story needed to be at least 250 words long; this one is only twenty-five words long. But, then, I’ve cheated a couple of times before, so I’m not going to fuss about it too much.

There are a couple of inspirations for this one. I’ll mention them after the story.

BAKER’S DENOUEMENT

about 25 words

Given his talents, it was not surprising that Marcus ended up working in the cafeteria. After all, peeling peaches was very much like peeling skulls.

As I said, there were two inspirations to this story. First, a week ago my wife and I went to visit her sister up in Seattle. Her sister is a baker, and she suggested that I write a story about an evil baker. Easy enough. And then today my wife bought a big box of peaches at the farmer’s market and spent the afternoon making jam, jelly, peach pie filling, all manner of goodies. I helped her for awhile by peeling some peaches, which is made easier by boiling the peaches briefly until the skin is soft; then you can just rub it off with your thumb. Surely, I thought, other objects can be peeled this way. And then the character of Marcus and his fate burst into my mind.

And that’s it for this project. Later this week, a longer post about this whole Story of the Week thing and what I learned from it… and whether it was a good idea at all.

Yeah, I offer these stories for free. But you can still give me money for them if you like. It's not like I'm gonna complain. Just click on the friendly bunny.
