God save me, I LOVE this show! With Heroes and Battlestar Galactica both on mid-season hiatus, Doctor Who is the best science fiction on television. And even when those two shows are on the air, Doctor Who still gives them a run for their money.
Some spoilers beneath the fold.

Last week, I finally got around to watching Fantastic Four (not Rise of the Silver Surfer, mind you, but the original film from 2005). I guess it wasn’t the worst film I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t even the worst superhero film I’ve ever seen (for my money, you just can’t get worse than Superman IV, [...]

There’s a fascinating collection called "The Fantastic in Art and Fiction" over at the Cornell University Library’s website, featuring nearly three hundred woodcuts, engravings, and paintings on fantastic themes such as "Demons", "Fantastic Space", "The Grotesque", and more. This image is a woodblock of "the demon who gives knowledge of languages", from the book Dictionnaire [...]

Since I started taking my writing seriously back in 2003, I’ve only published six stories (but gotten a heck of a lot of rejection slips), so I’m not sure I have a lot of writerly cred; at the same time, though, I feel like I’ve learned at least a little bit, and have some insight [...]

I’m generally a scientifically-minded, skeptical sort of guy (yes, I’m a Christian too — and yes, the two are compatible), but I’m pretty sure that there’s a lot more going on in the world than we know about. In short, as Neil Gaiman put it in A Game of You, I do believe in weird [...]

People are still blogging like it’s the end of the world, and that’s perfectly appropriate, though I personally got zombified a couple of hours ago and my narrative self is presumably wandering the fields of Dixon, looking for fresh flesh to munch on. This kind of participatory narrative is fun to be a part of, [...]

Coffee. Lots and lots and lots of coffee. The caffeine and the albuterol (lots and lots of that, too) seem to be shoving the neurons back to life for a bit. But anyway it’s time to stop kidding myslf.

God, my arm where that guy bit me this morning is really burning. I keep running cold water on it and lathering it with NeoSporin and a cortisone cream, but nothing helps. It’s driving me crazy. I’ve got an ice pack on it now which makes it hard to type but at least makes the [...]

Jonathan Coulton is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Today I’ve got his song "Re: Your Brains" stuck on demon-loop in my head. I’m feeling kind of queasy, probably because of the fight in the back yard this morning, hence the headache and the demon loop music. I called my health insurance provider’s advice line and [...]

The Redneckification of Dixon continues.
Back in April, voters in Dixon defeated a series of measures which would have allowed Magna Entertainment to build a horse race track in Dixon (I liked that Magna spent thirty times more on the "Yes" campaign than the opposition, and still got defeated). We’ve already got a WalMart and more [...]

No, not that kind of smut. I’m talking about corn smut, a fungal disease of maize. Corn kernels infected with corn smut turn gray and bloated and just look really ugly. Of course, corn smut is also considered a delicacy in some areas, though it’s generally considered a pest in agricultural areas of the US. [...]
